There is a certain theory called the Peter Principle which came from Dr Laurence Peter that states that every employee is bound to be promote if he does well in his job, but his new position will be something he is not really suited for. Then you are promoted to a position that gives you more responsibility and tasks which are not that easy. You realize that the limit of your competence is only up to the last job you had. There is no demotion in corporations but sometimes people who get promoted to certain positions will soon find themselves getting less effective as compared to the positions they held before. Although this may be true, the corporation still continue to do well since there are still other employees who are still doing well in their positions and have not yet reached their level of incompetence. There is no such success problem for a person running his own business since there is no hierarchy to speak of. In your own business, success and failure are only dependent on what you do; do well and you succeed, and do badly and you fail.
